TRIUM Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force Launched

The success of the TRIUM programme lies in its rich history of diversity since its inception in 2001, with over one thousand alumni in ninety countries across the globe.

Bringing a shared belief into action

Each TRIUM cohort typically brings together executives from 30 different nationalities and 20+ different business sectors leading to a rich learning experience and an invaluable peer to peer exchanges. It is with this spirit that TRIUM students and alumni have renewed their commitment and focus to form the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force with the specific aim of supporting diversity and fostering inclusion, identifying and sharing resources and best practices across the student and alumni community and formulate an actionable roadmap for improvement.

In August 2020 TRIUM students and alumni came forward to act as active ambassadors for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives in the TRIUM community.

As a marketer, I weave stories around products, their positioning and benefits. However, diversity is not a story to me, it is part of my identity. As a third culture individual, growing up in a country that was neither my mother’s nor my father’s homeland meant regularly adapting and navigating from one culture to the next. Working with countries across four continents further provided me with rich insights that enabled me to become a more versatile communicator. As a Swiss-army knife navigating the waters between marketing and sales, business development, retail, communication and HR, this proved invaluable! Now more than ever, I am convinced that diverse teams are high performance teams and that diversity, is de facto an added value.

Questions of diversity, equity and inclusion have long been part of my life, whether it be in my professional or personal life. It has always mattered to me that those values not merely remain good intentions, but that actions be taken to create a world which is truly diverse, equitable and inclusive. When I was 8, I switched from traditional ballet to boxing, because why not? Boxing made so much more sense to me. I was puzzled when I saw I was the only girl in the boxing class. Today, I would say I was already rejecting gender categorization! As an adult working for a global leading online media company, I put a novel emphasis on matters repeatedly brought up by women on our online forums - from targeted articles to empowering events, and political lobbying - to give more power to all voices. It is for the unique diversity of the Trium program that I chose this Global EMBA, and thus I am all the more proud to be part of its task force. Progress has been made all over the world as the needs for, and benefits of DEI are becoming more recognized; but we must still do better, for us and for the next generations.

While the work of the task force aims to focus TRIUM’s evolution as a diverse and inclusive programme, these themes pervade throughout society and the Mosaic initiative led by Gillian Keating, Class of 2021, aims to galvanize a powerful group of people from all over the world gathered under the TRIUM banner, to do JUST one thing as a collective - to pledge their commitment to change, leveraging their senior international profile and experience. In Gillian's words: ‘We can’t solve racism on our own, but we can take steps to make real CHANGE. We as a society place limits on people every day, that are borne out of a lack of understanding, an acceptance of what is as opposed to what could be, a lack of empathy…whatever our excuses. The challenge now is to turn this loss, this tiny vignette into the limits that plague so many communities every day into a force for CHANGE."

Being an African and speaking French as official language and working in shipping and international trade industry for 20 Years, I met and worked with ships crews and customers all over the world. I have experienced several multicultural environments which opened my exposure to Diversity and strengthen my confidence. That helped me to be part of the top management of the local branch of a French/Singaporean company. Here was the real Inclusion I deeply felt at that time, however I had been disillusioned when my CEO informed me that he was not able to increase my salary anymore because I was a local employee in spite of my good performances. In addition, he explained that the head office will not accept such a salary level. Instead of being frustrated by that Equity issue which seemed unfair to me, It led me to understand that I needed to update and upgrade my business skills and knowledge at a point that my difference (culture, ethnicity etc) will be an advantage to overcome such hurdles. In this respect I applied to TRIUM Global Executive MBA which is a truly international with a strong cultural diversity. As a business owner today, I can value the priceless training and world class social environment opportunity offered by TRIUM. At TRIUM, Diversity & Inclusion are not only words but values with strong meaning to everyone.
