Before becoming an executive coach, Andy enjoyed a full career as a Royal Air Force officer. He spent over 30 years in leadership roles, including Station Commander of RAF Waddington and NATO Commander of Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan – a challenging role with 17,000 personnel from 17 nationalities and 300 aircraft, under constant threat of attack.

Andy moved to the commercial sector in 2012, joining tech start-up Ethos VO Ltd as COO, overseeing 5-years of growth from 5 people and an idea, to 100 staff and a group turnover of £3m. In parallel, he joined the board of a housing association specialising in supporting military veterans. Since becoming Chairman in 2013, he has driven a 30% increase in the number of homes the organisation is able to provide for vulnerable ex-servicemen and women.

Andy now works as an executive coach, with a particular focus on senior leaders and their teams. He operates across the plethora of challenges faced by his clients, but with particular emphasis on leadership, strategy, and stakeholder management in complex, ambiguous environments. He believes that emotional intelligence is fundamental in developing effective leaders, and works with his clients develop strategies to leverage their strengths and manage their risks in order to become more successful.

As a coach, he is able to draw on his extensive experience as a senior leader across the public, private and third sectors, frequently within high-pressure, politicised, and international contexts. Complexity, ambiguity and having to make decisions with incomplete data are familiar challenges and Andy is adept at supporting his clients in navigating these waters effectively. He also understands how lonely it can be in such senior positions, and how to manage this. In addition, Andy inherently understands career transitions, having had 12 different jobs within the military and, more recently, moved to leadership positions in both the commercial and non-profit sectors. His clients are typically senior staff – and those on track to be so – within blue chip organisations, such as Prudential Insurance, BAE Systems, and the National Grid.

Andy has an honours degree in psychology, an MBA, and a postgraduate certificate in coaching and development. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies, the UK Defence Strategic Leadership Programme, the Canadian Forces Command and Staff Course, and the Centre of Creative Leadership, Greensboro, North Carolina. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Learning and Management, a member of the British Psychological Society, and certified to use the EQi2.0 and EQ360 emotional intelligence assessment tools.
