Xiang Gao

With a background in accounting, finance and tax consultancy, Xiang has developed cross-sector expertise across China, Hong Kong, Europe and Australia. Xiang is now advancing her career further as Managing Director for YaDa Capital, a Private Equity Fund focusing on healthcare in China, an industry which she describes as currently ‘undergoing a revolution’. Xiang Gao’s reflections on her transformational TRIUM experience so far as she prepares to re-join her classmates at their upcoming Module 5 in Shanghai:

I am getting more confident, daring to talk about topics that I knew little about in the past; I am more vigilant, always searching for and filtering new information and perspectives, and most importantly, I am more globalized.

Here Xiang discusses the benefits of a Global EMBA for leaders based in China, how TRIUM is empowering her to achieve her objectives and her learning highlights so far:

You made a conscious decision to move back to China as Chairwoman of Zhejiang Yada Healthcare and you have taken on a global EMBA programme reaching beyond China across three continents – what insights has TRIUM brought which have helped you?

TRIUM has been a fascinating, challenging and rewarding journey. I have learnt from our professors, the 2019 cohort and TRIUM alumni during the past four modules. The ability to keep the work, life and study balance is an art. The ultimate joy comes out of the painful commitment paid, tremendous efforts made and the opportunity of starting to think and act from a fresh, new perspective that most people in ordinary life would not. TRIUM enables me. It shows me globalization is undisputable, AI is not far from any industry, anywhere in the world, true marketing is probably no more marketing, block chain may be the future, valuation of a company is not simply gauging its market or book value…The truth is, the power of everything makes a TRIUMer. I am getting more confident, daring to talk about topics that I knew little about in the past; I am more vigilant, always searching for and filtering new information and perspectives, and most importantly, I am more globalized.

At the beginning of your journey you described your objectives to be a business leader in the field of healthcare and be the ultimate solution provider for medical and healthcare needs for people in China. How is TRIUM helping you to achieve your objectives?

TRIUM provides a platform for both life-long learning and a life-long alumni community. It is empowering me with useful information and great contacts. The Healthcare industry in China is undergoing a revolution, creating challenges and opportunities for the private sector. I believe what is happening in China was what many developed economies went through one or two decades ago, the process of development cannot be skipped but may be shortened. From the TRIUM program I have access to case studies in medical and healthcare industries with all-around in-depth analysis, which are inspiring and a great reference to what I am doing daily with my work. Moreover, I have found similar-minded classmates and alumni that are in the same industry, and I have benefited from these exchanges.

What do you see as TRIUM’s greatest benefits for you as a senior businesswoman from China?

TRIUM is focused on building its business brand for leaders in China to the same level it is elsewhere across the world. It is also focused on increasing the number of women in each cohort – which is a challenge for executive education globally. Taking both into consideration, I feel privileged and I am glad that TRIUM is in my title. Second, since China opened its door to the world from the 1970’s, we have prospered from trading, revolutionary technologies and in a nutshell, globalization. John Donne put it rightfully – No Man is An Island. I benefit from the power of TRIUM diversity and the global exposure that TRIUM provides: three prestigious schools, three continents, 30+ nationalities, 60+ executives in a class, and 1000+ strong alumni.

What has been your highlight so far? An experience with your colleagues, a module or particular lecture?

I simply enjoy everything: the three schools, the classes, the cities and extracurricular activities. To give one highlight as an example: on a beautiful April day on the HEC campus our marketing class was carried on from indoor to outdoor, so everybody could enjoy the sun, the breeze, and make the most of the true luxury: studying and relaxing at the same time.

What would your advice be to those currently considering TRIUM?

Go for it, be one of us.

Three words to describe your TRIUM experience?

Fun, fulfilling, worthwhile.
